Collinsville’s Marcela Hernandez
To compete in cross country, you need a few things. The ability to control your thoughts and focus on course is one, along with countless hours of training and improving your time is another. There is a calculated way to compete in cross country and Collinsville High School’s Marcela Hernandez has that down to a science.
“When running, I tend to focus on the person in front of me, and my breathing. I like to stay relaxed while pushing myself. Honestly, I like to tell myself that I am not alone in my discomfort, every runner feels it. It’s just how you handle and what you make of it! That helps me a lot especially in difficult races or weather,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez said she loves being part of the team at CHS and loves competing with her teammates.
“What I truly love the most about my team and teammates is our closeness and dedication towards running. I love to witness my teammates not only wanting to succeed for themselves but also for us as a team,” Hernandez said. “It’s amazing to feel the positivity and encouragement through setting goals and effort in friendships.”
This season Hernandez is working hard to set some personal bests and help her team make it to state.
“My expectation for this season is to give my best and be happy with the results, knowing I gave it all. However, more technically and specifically speaking, I want to break 22 minutes and hopefully qualify for state with my team! I am super enthusiastic, and I want to finish the season knowing every practice, every race, and every effort I put in was my very best,” said Hernandez.
Also a member of FCCLA, National Honor Society, Student Council, and the track & field team, Hernandez said she does have her favorites in the classroom.
“My favorite subject in school is science! My favorite and most memorable teacher would have to be Mrs. Herald, my English teacher from 10th and 11th grade,” said Hernandez.
Away from school, Hernandez enjoys several activities at home.
“I enjoy sketching, listening to music, reading, hanging out with my friends and family, watching tv shows and movies, running, and taking walks in my free time.”
